Hanging by a Thread; Part 1 - Getting Your Ears Pierced

Hey rosettes!
This was a suggested topic (by Kate, the girl with the awesome blog, so if you STILL haven't gone to it........girl, you are INSANE so forget my blog and check hers out ASAP @ katesknicknacks.blogspot.com. You are not allowed to read the rest of this post until you read every single one of hers) so I (yeah, it's just me today) decided to just go for it.

So lets skip the introduction, and I can tell you right away that today's post will be about EARRINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay so there are MANY types of earrings. From the simple studs, to the elegant hangings, and the stylish loops, there is A LOT to cover. I won't be able to talk about the entire world of earrings in one little post, so there is going be multiple parts to this topic. I mean, I could fit it all in, but the post would take ages to read and you'd be bored out of your shoes so I think I'm gonna go with the more practical way.

Today, I will start by telling you about getting your ears pierced. Yup, it's an important time in your life and whether you are getting them done next week or your mother says you have to wait until you are 21, getting your ears pierced is not something to play at. Below are 5 things you need to know beforehand;

1. Choosing a location:
Like I said, ear piercing is an important time, and many people choose to celebrate the event with friends and family a jewelry store that offers ear piercing. Others prefer the quiet and privacy of a doctor’s office or a beauty salon. Fortunately, newer technology in ear piercing equipment have made it possible to have your ears pierced safely in any of these locations.

2. When they offer you ice......

ACCEPT IT. It makes it so much easier. And you might be thinking, how do I know? Well, having my ears pierced when I was a couple months old, I don't exactly remember the experience. But, I do have friends who got theirs pierced, and they say that many people refuse the ice to appear "stronger" and "braver", but I am honest when I say that I would wholeheartedly accept the ice if I were in your place.

3. Choose the right earring:

Your earring will have to stay in for a minimum of 6 weeks to keep it from closing, whether it is a cartilage or earlobe piercing. So make sure you absolutely LOVE your earring. The piercing earring should be "ultra thin with a fine point" so make sure it glides on smoothly.

 Next, check the backing. The standard butterfly clasps require adjustment following the piercing and leave the sharp tip of the piercing earring exposed. The patented Inverness Safety Back™ shields the tip of the piercing earring and can’t be over tightened. This allows for airflow and promotes safer healing. Plus, it is so much more comfortable.

After that's out of the way, be sure that the piercing earring you choose is made of premium hypoallergenic metals that follow the highest international standards for nickel content. 14 KT gold is the ideal choice, but quality hypoallergenic piercings are also available in Medical Grade Stainless Steel and 24 KT Gold Plate. For people with a nickel allergy, the safest choice is Medical Grade Titanium. I like to recommend a pure coating (preferably gold). Some people may find discomfort in alloys.

Finally, make sure that the packaging is safe. Again, Inverness earrings provide the best packaging because it does not allow dust or other contaminating particles to enter through.

4. Make sure your piercer is qualified and has the proper experience and training. You don't want any "accidents".

5. Make sure that you clean your ears with the proper solution at least three times a day using an aftercare solution. Wash your hands before touching your ears, and always keep the piercing site CLEAN. You should also turn the earrings one full rotation between 4 to 6 times a day. Also, make sure that your piercing doesn't close. Earlobe piercings should stay in for 6 weeks and cartilage piercings should stay in for 12 weeks. Do not remove your earrings during this time. After the first six months after getting your ears pierced, do not remove your earrings for more than 24 hours at a time. If you do, they will close. It is best to keep cartilage piercings in at all times.

If you think you can handle the above, then GO FOR IT and get your ears pierced. They don't hurt to most people. There will be slight discomfort at first. But you'll only feel a pinch when getting them pierced. Close your eyes and don't look in a mirror (even if they offer you one) when getting your ears pierced. One of my cousins didn't realize it was over until they told her!!! It's better not to know when they are doing it, so you don't expect/brace yourself for pain. Bring a stress ball and/or a friends and you're good to go!

    1. six months; you can't take it off at all (meaning you can't change your earrings) for the first six weeks, but then after that (for the next half year), you can't take it off for more than 24 hrs. Hope this helps!
